Do-it-Yourself Tips

Here are some energy-saving tips that can save you a boatload of money and help you "GO GREEN" environmentally just by properly maintaining and carefully operating your air conditioning and heating system.

  • Lower the temperature on your thermostat in the winter, or raise it in the summer, during the daytime when you're home. You could save up to 5% on energy usage for every degree you either lower the temperature in winter or raise it in the summer. Instead of making your system do all the work, wear an extra layer in the winter to help keep warm, or wear lighter, well-ventilated clothes in the summer to help keep cool
  • Lower your thermostat to 65 degrees in the winter, or raise it to 80 degrees in the summer, while you're away from home. However, if you have a heat pump, only lower it by 2 or 3 degrees from your typical setting to avoid making the auxiliary heat kick on when you turn the thermostat back up
  • Even better, install a programmable thermostat to adjust temperature settings according to a preset schedule. This way you can warm up your house just before you wake up, or warm it up or it cools off before you get home
  • Repair leaky faucets. Even a small drip can be the equivalent of wasting a bathtub full of water each month. If it is hot water... even worse!
  • Find and plug those leaks. Seal leaks between a door and its frame with weather stripping and fill leaks between the window frame and wall with caulking
  • Seal light switches and electrical sockets with low-cost foam gaskets
  • Make sure your fireplace is properly vented to prevent your chimney from drawing heated air out of your house
  • Remove window air conditioning units in the wintertime to prevent them from drafting in cold air.
  • Insulate hot water pipes to prevent wasting heat in unconditioned spaces
  • Install low-flow showerheads
  • Lower the temperature on your water heater. By reducing it by only a few degrees, you will lower your utility costs while still enjoying the hot water you want
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) to save energy and have them last six to 10 times longer
  • Install lighting controls like dimmers, timers, or motion sensors.
  • Install a ceiling fan in rooms you spend the most time in, with an option to reverse the airflow. Most models will allow you to set the direction in the motor turns so you can blow the warm air back down into the living space.

Questions to Ask Your Contractor:

  • Are you and your subcontractors licensed to do this type of work? Your homeowner's insurance does not cover work done by unlicensed contractors!
  • Are you insured to do this type of work? Your homeowner's insurance may not cover an accident, injury, or damage! Require <$2+> Million!
  • Are your installers trained to use power tools and equipment in and around occupied spaces? Avoid negligence claims against you, the homeowner, by requiring the contractor to provide a copy of their safety program!
  • Do you perform drug testing to screen your employees for hire? Avoid negligence claims against you, the homeowner, by choosing a contractor that performs drug testing for all new hires!
  • Do you run a criminal background check on your employees? Don't be victimized! Many service people have a history of theft and other crimes.
  • Will you guarantee my ultimate comfort and satisfaction? Get this 100% satisfaction guarantee in writing!
  • Will you use driveway protectors, mats, & drop cloths while working inside/outside my home? Damage to your property could raise our total cost of installation dramatically!
  • Will you clean up at the end of each day? There is no need to have your home use or beauty detracted from it!
  • Will you remove my old equipment and all debris from the premises? "Disposal fees" added at the end of the job are a common "hidden charge."
  • Will you provide NATE-certified technicians to work on air conditioning/heating equipment? Avoid improper equipment set-up by requiring the contractor to assign you NATE-certified staff!
  • Do you have office staff to handle potential customer care situations?
  • Who's going to respond to your questions, comments, concerns, or complaints?
  • Have you been in business very long? Only an experienced contractor can install it correctly - putting you in the error-free, top 10%.
  • Will you guarantee that the price quoted will be the final price, even if you overlooked something? Beware of a low initial price followed by a price increase after the work has started!

Ask These Questions for System Replacement:

  • Will all work meet or exceed existing codes and will you be pulling a permit? Avoid this liability exposure by requiring the contractor to pull a job permit
  • Do you use DOE-endorsed written installation, start-up, and warranty management procedures? Avoid this pitfall, or worse: defacing your property. Ask to see their installation procedures!
  • Will you do a whole-house "Manual J" load calculation and duct distribution analysis? Avoid energy waste and comfort issues by requiring contractors to do a "Manual J" & duct sizing!
  • Is any maintenance included? The only way to keep your equipment running properly is with regular maintenance!
  • Are you authorized to provide the equipment manufacturer's recommended repairs and maintenance? To assure equipment is back up and running quickly, get proof of being an authorized dealer in writing!
